Cooperative Learning Activity

1. In pairs, you are to work out the monthly roster for the children's ward requiring 4 Registered Nurses (RN) and 2 Enrolled Nurses (EN) on each shift.

Print the following Word doc. to have all the necessary information about the legal requirements and the Nurse information.

2. Work out the possible rosters for a 28 day period with one Public Holiday taking into account the Award Rules!

3. Are there any nurses that you have to approach to do more work than they really want to?

Will this make your roster work??? Will that particular nurse be unhappy about their work situation?

4. Do you need to hire more RNs or ENs? Full-time or casual?

5. Check with your partner to see if you have followed the rules and made up a correct roster.

This activity is based on Edward de Bono's "Consider All Factors (CAF) method" and is to be applied to a real life problem facing the world.

Target Group: Years 11 - 12 students studying Biology or Philosophy;
1st Year Nursing/Paramedicine Degree students.

CAF: is a critical thinking tool for exploring all relevant aspects of a situation before making a decision, ensuring crucial elements aren't overlooked and leading to better judgments, plans, and conclusions.

The Consider All Factors (CAF) method, developed by Edward de Bono,

This activity is used to summarise a topic as a small and large group.
Name the topic, issue or problem for analysis.
Students individually list all possible factors.
In small groups, students compare and add to their lists.
A whole class list is constructed.
Students select the three or four most important factors that could summarise the topic or issue or resolve the problem.

The problem is : Sepsis and how Nurse Managers (along with others) can quickly diagnose and treat this condition.

Europe along with Ireland has some ideas.

1. Form groups of 3 - 5 students.

As a group, you are to

Identify the Topic/Situation: Clearly define the subject you need to analyse or decide upon (e.g., a new policy).
Brainstorm Factors: List as many relevant factors as possible, without initial judgment.
Start Broad: Think about factors affecting you, others, and society.
Go Deeper: Push beyond the first few obvious factors to uncover hidden or less-considered elements.
Don't Censor: Include silly or unconventional ideas, as they can spark more valuable thoughts.
Structure the List (Optional): Group factors into categories like:
- Factors affecting yourself (personal impact, cost).
- Factors affecting other people (customers, employees, community).
- Factors affecting society/environment (traffic, pollution, long-term effects).
Review and Refine: Examine the complete list to ensure key factors haven't been missed, preventing rash decisions.
Apply to Decision-Making: Use the comprehensive list as input for choosing, planning, or judging.
