Anaesthetist

Anaesthetist
Anaesthetists are medical professionals who anaesthetise patients before they undergo various types of surgery. They either put their patients under general anaesthetic, which places them in a state of unconsciousness or local anaesthesia, which numbs certain parts of the body to prevent patients feeling pain in those areas.

They typically work alongside surgeons, cardiac nurses and ECG technicians, constantly monitoring their patients' condition throughout procedures and assisting them as they regain full consciousness after surgery.
Cardiac Nurse

Cardiologist
As registered nurses, Cardiac nurses, also called Cardiovascular nurses, specialise in working with patients who suffer from cardiovascular disease.

Some of their typical tasks include helping patients with heart disease follow the treatment plans that their cardiologists recommend, monitoring their progress throughout their treatment and administering appropriate medications to help the recovery process.

Some also work in emergency care units and perform urgent procedures on patients with very serious conditions, while others work in surgical settings and assist cardiac surgeons while they perform surgery on their patients' cardiovascular systems.
Cardiac Technologist

Cardiologist
Cardiac technologists support cardiology teams by operating specialist equipment for cardiac patient care.

Some of their tasks include the preparation of patients for various medical procedures by connecting them to devices that monitor their vital signs and the operation of imaging equipment to display images and dimensions of the heart and cardiovascular system. They may also measure their patients' heart rate and rhythm to assess their cardiac activity while they use a treadmill or stationary bike.

Cardiologists and cardiac surgeons use the data that cardiac technologists collect to make informed decisions regarding patient care.
Cardiologist

Cardiologist
Cardiologists, also called Cardiology Physicians or Cardiology Consultants, are medical doctors who aim to discover, treat and prevent diseases related to the cardiovascular system.

They typically work in hospitals and clinics and regularly meet patients to assess their symptoms and perform specific physical examinations to determine if they may be suffering from cardiovascular disease.

Depending on their findings, cardiologists either work with patients to develop long-term treatment plans to manage their illnesses or, in more serious and urgent cases, they refer the patients to a cardiovascular surgeon to explore surgical solutions to their conditions.
Cardiology Pharmacist

Pharmacist
Pharmacists are experts in medication who ensure that patients receive the correct medicine at the right dose by providing them with the appropriate dosage and advising them on how and when to take it.

Cardiology pharmacists are Hospital Pharmacists who specialise in medications that help high-risk cardiovascular patients manage their conditions. They're an important part of a patient's healthcare team and work with patients with all forms of cardiac disease, including hypertension, stroke, arrhythmia and those who have undergone procedures like heart transplants or the insertion of an artificial heart pump.

Cardiothoracic  Surgeon

Cardiologist
Cardiac surgeons specialise in surgery on the heart and major blood vessels and can further specialise in one of two areas of cardiac medicine.

The first is congenital and paediatric surgery, which involves resolving heart-related anomalies in infant patients, such as repairing heart valves and holes in the tissue between heart chambers.

The second specialisation is cardiothoracic surgery, which involves repairing various disorders related to the heart, circulatory system, lungs, trachea and oesophagus in adults.
Clinical Cardiac Perfusionist

Cardiologist
Clinical cardiac perfusionists operate during cardiac surgery and use special techniques to temporarily stop the heart, allowing the cardiac surgeon to perform repairs.

They're trained to adjust their methods depending on the patient's exact condition and their vital signs during the surgery.

Some of their other tasks are to prepare for surgery by studying their patients' medical histories and performing various administrative duties, like managing their equipment and purchasing necessary supplies.
Electrocardiogram (ECG) technician

Cardiologist
ECG Technicians, also called Electrocardiograph Technicians, operate the instruments that record the heart's activity.

ECG Technicians are specialist Cardiac Technologists.

They help physicians observe and assess various heart-related conditions with the help of special equipment that monitors their patients' blood pressure and heart function.

The physicians use this information to develop personalised treatment plans for their patients. ECG technicians compare their patients' test results to normal values to detect the increased risk of serious heart conditions, such as heart attacks.
Exercise physiologist

Exercise Sports Scientist
Exercise physiologists are health professionals who work with patients to develop exercise plans to help the patient prevent or manage various physical symptoms.

They work in a wide variety of medical institutions, including hospitals, clinics and rehabilitation centres and may also work with sports teams and local community fitness centres.
Medical Sonographer
(on a separate page)

Medical Imaging Technologist
Medical sonographers, also called ultrasound technicians, use ultrasonic imaging equipment to create accurate images of their patient's organs.

Their usual tasks include explaining the test protocols to patients before, during and after procedures, analysing the images and sharing their conclusions with other members of the medical team to help them make informed decisions regarding patient care. They're also usually responsible for keeping the ultrasound equipment clean and functional.
Operating Room Technician

Operating Room Technician
Operating Room Technician or Operating Department Practitioners work in the surgery team. They prepare the operating theatre so that it is ready for surgery. As an operating department practitioner, they are the link between the surgical team and the rest of the theatre and wider hospital.

They help patients through the different stages of perioperative care, including preparing the equipment doctors use for anaesthesia, intravenous equipment and machines to open a patient's airway.

In the operating theatre, they prepare the instruments, microscopes and other surgical equipment, anticipating what the surgical team requires and responding with the right instruments. In the recovery phase, you assess patients so health professionals may move them back onto the ward.

Life on the Job

Helen Taussig
Founder of Paediatric Cardiology
Paediatric cardiologists diagnose and treat children with heart conditions before they are born, through childhood and into adulthood. Pediatric cardiologists treat a range of heart conditions in infants, children, and adolescents. These heart conditions can be divided into two key categories: congenital and acquired.

Dr. Helen Taussig overcame severe dyslexia, partial deafness, and sexism to earn a medical degree and, in the 1940s, she helped develop a life-saving operation for "blue baby syndrome," a birth defect of the heart that had a very high morality rate. Now recognized as the founder of the field of paediatric cardiology, her unique insights on previously incurable babies would go on to change the field of neonatal medicine forever. "To be a leader, you have to recognize where the gaps are," observed Dr. Anne Murphy, a paediatric cardiologist at Johns Hopkins Children's Centre. "[Dr. Taussig] recognized there was a gap in caring for these patients with heart defects... and she made the effort to work with others to make a difference."
Respiratory Therapist
(new page coming)

Respiratory therapist
Respiratory therapists help patients manage and overcome various breathing-related disorders. They provide care for patients with chronic illnesses that directly affect the lung function and help patients when they're in emergency situations, for example, in the moments after suffering a heart attack.

Respiratory therapists usually diagnose their patients' conditions based on their symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment plans. They also assist patients who are unable to breathe independently by fitting them with artificial breathing devices until they can breathe on their own again.
