Encouraging

Cooperative Learning
"On the Job" [OTJ] is a careers teaching resource that uses careers as a way to enhance Literacy and Numeracy skills in students in a fun and engaging way. OTJ concentrates on providing information, having creative and critical thinking skill activities, and, links to Associations, YouTubes about a particular job.

Our Educational Philosophy

* To encourage students to critically think, extend their numeracy skills and promote their literacy
* To show, engage and inspire students with amazing Australians who are working [or worked] in a particular job.
* Save student time as information is all in one place - job information; videos; Did you know?; Activities

What is On the Job?

*
FREE Online Resource with over 2000+ jobs listed along with information, activities and links.
* Full Job Listing
* Australian focus
* Uses the vehicle of careers to:
       ~ inspire and encourage students to look at real world situations
       ~ make decisions, and
       ~ think

This eLearning resource uses literacy and numeracy activities, from simple to complex, to explore a range of careers for Australian students (Years 5 - 12). We have produced lesson plans and guides to achieve this goal.

The website is paired with lesson plans, activities, reading material, discussion questions, games and more.

"On the Job" builds on what students have learnt in their earlier years in Primary School about the world of work and helps students go from the concrete to the abstract in their thinking.

"On the Job" has challenging information, activities and links for students in PrimaryPrimary MiddleMiddle  High SchoolSecondary.

Frances Moore
Creator and Maintainer

Frances has a degree in B.A. (Biological Sciences) Macquarie University, a Diploma in Education (UNE); a
Diploma of Business; Certicate of Teacher Education (Classroom Practice) The Federation of Australasian Philosophy in Schools Association (FAPSA); a Philosophy for Children Level 2, Train the Trainer (FAPSA); and, a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

Frances set up "On the Job" website early in her career as the Managing Director of Moore Technologies at the request of a Deputy Principal in a Primary School. When launched back in 2001, the website received a "Golden Web Award" for creative thinking and encouraging students to be engaged in careers in a different way.

Web Award

As an Educator with over 30 years experience, Frances is passionate about critical thinking and eLearning. She decided that she would use her background in Secondary Education to expand the On the Job website to target students and their teachers from Years 5 - 10. This target group remained until 5 years ago. When showing Years 10 - 12 Teachers the website, they said that they would like to use it within their classes and thought that the activities were well suited to encourage their students in a range of subject areas.

You will notice a different icon, PhilosophyPhilosophy across the website. During her time in the Department of Education, Frances was asked to assess the significantly different NAPLAN scores from one school in Brisbane. There she discovered that the school conducted "Philosophy 4 Schools" with students from Kindergarten to Year 7. Their scores were off the charts so Frances investigated further. She then embarked on getting training in this programme. Frances is now a Train the Trainer in Philosophy 4 Schools (previously Philosophy 4 Children) and is the Secretary of SOPHY - the ACT branch. Frances hopes that by adding stimulus materials to OTJ website, teachers will conduct Communities of Inquiry to promote deeper thinking amongst their students.

At one stage, Frances collected over 19 thousand and reviewed over 12 thousand WebQuests [the Rich Thinking Task variety - rather than research assignments] in her hope that teachers would love these inquiry and project based activities and use them in their classrooms.  See below for some examples that Frances created or developed.

Frances continues to add new job profiles each week to OTJ and would be delighted to hear from teachers if they need any particular jobs researched for their students. Each day she learns more and is having fun!

WebQuests created by Frances
On The Job

WebQuests are Rich Tasks. WebQuests are Lesson Plans with all the resources ready for you to use.

These WebQuests are Rich Tasks where students are asked to explore more deeply into a topic. Students use and develop their creative and critical thinking skills, discuss, debate and, maybe, carry out a  Community of Inquiry - a Philosophical Concept.
