This book has been directed at students who are 8 - 10 years of age and created in 1995 by Philip Pullman. However, the story has also been made into a stage play and an opera. In the activities below, your students will be challenged to write, create, create a scene soundtrack and/or discuss this book. It is suitable for all students in Years 5 - 12. "Standing on the shoulders of giants" is a metaphor wihich means: Using the understanding gained by major thinkers who have gone before in order to make intellectual progress (Source: Wikipedia)In a letter to Robert Hooke in 1676, Isaac Newton wrote: “If I have seen further it is by standing on ye shoulders of Giants.” Newton was alluding to those who had come before, such as Galileo Galilei, on whose work he had built. What to do... You are to critically examine this book - you are critically read, think and analyse; the characters; plot; the perspective and impact; context, purpose and the function.
Individually, you are to then write a story [with or without these characters] or continue this story [one chapter] in the same way as Pullman has written.

first Chapter [1 - 10 pages of full text] or another chapter in the creation
of your cartoon.

3. After filling out your chart, you are to share with your group your article's information. This information is to be added to their charts. Repeat this until all three articles are shared. 4. Taking the last two columns - Chemistry and Wow - discuss what you have learnt in your group. Then as a class, put together all that you have learnt in these two areas.
